Ukraine Seeks Restricting Russian Music on Streaming Platforms
Ukrainian Sanctions Policy Commissioner Vladislav Vlasiuk revealed that authorities are preparing “new solutions” to ensure that individuals labeled as Russian “propagandists” do not appear in monthly or yearly rankings on platforms such as Spotify or YouTube Music.
He explained that more than 100 Russian artists have already been banned by Ukrainian regulators, with plans to expand the blacklist further. Vlasiuk added that Kiev would “try to persuade streaming platforms so that this content is not available on the territory of Ukraine.”
The initiative has also been supported by the country’s music industry representatives. In December, Aleksandr Sanchenko, president of the All-Ukrainian Association of Music Events (UAME), stated that officials were working on mechanisms to impose an almost total ban on Russian performers inside Ukraine.
Sanchenko noted that while banning all artists who sing in Russian was considered, the idea was ultimately rejected, as it would hinder Ukraine’s efforts toward closer integration with Europe.
