Audio Tapes Allegedly Reveal Suspect Boasting About Tupac Shakur Killing
Tupac was shot multiple times on September 7, 1996, while stopped at a traffic light on the Las Vegas Strip. He later died in hospital from his injuries. The case has remained one of the most high-profile unsolved murders in music history.
Authorities have charged Duane 'Keffe D' Davis with allegedly coordinating the drive-by shooting. Investigators have also identified his nephew, Orlando 'Baby Lane' Anderson, who was later killed in 1998, as the individual believed to have fired the fatal shots.
Prosecutors claim that Davis can be heard in prison phone recordings discussing aspects of the case and allegedly acknowledging involvement. According to legal sources cited in reports, he is also said to have described events and shared what were described as “intricate details” while exploring potential media-related opportunities, including film and television projects.
Investigators have long pointed to Davis’s prior public remarks as part of the case file. Before his arrest in 2023, he made multiple statements in interviews, written accounts, and recorded conversations that appeared to reference the killing. He has pleaded not guilty and now argues that any earlier admissions were made for financial or personal gain rather than as factual confessions.
Prosecutors maintain that the killing stemmed from escalating tensions linked to rivalries within the 1990s hip-hop scene and associated gang conflicts, particularly involving the Bloods and Crips. They allege Davis held a senior position as a “shot caller” within the Crips.
At the time of his death, Tupac was involved in a widely publicized feud with The Notorious B.I.G., who himself was killed in a separate shooting in Los Angeles in 1997. The two artists became central figures in the East Coast–West Coast rivalry that defined much of mid-1990s hip-hop culture.
